Online Bookings for Saltaire & Shipley Businesses: A Proper Setup

Missed calls cost more than most marketing budgets. A booking or enquiry form sat on your own website fixes most of it. Here's what a proper setup looks like.

Saltaire, West Yorkshire

The single biggest leak for small service businesses in Saltaire and Shipley isn't marketing. It's missed calls.

Salons, clinics, dog groomers, tradespeople, restaurants — every one of them loses customers to a phone that rings while they're mid-job. The customer tries once, doesn't leave a voicemail, and goes to whoever picks up. That's not a branding problem. It's a booking problem.

Across the small service businesses we've audited in BD17 and BD18, somewhere between 15% and 30% of first-time enquiries come in outside working hours. Without a way to book or enquire online, almost all of those are lost to whoever the customer calls next.

What “online booking” actually means

Three different things, depending on your business:

  1. Full self-serve booking. The customer picks a date, a time, a service, pays a deposit, gets a confirmation email. You get a calendar entry. Used by hair, beauty, grooming, massage, clinics.
  2. Request a slot. The customer picks a rough time, sends details, you confirm back. Used by trades, mobile services, anyone who needs to check the job first.
  3. Table or event booking. The customer picks a date, party size, maybe a deposit. Used by restaurants, private dining, venues, classes.

All three do the same job: they let people book you at 11pm on a Sunday without you being involved.

What not to do

Please don't sign up for a £50-a-month booking platform with its own branded subdomain where customers have to create an account. Every click costs you a customer. The goal is a booking form sat on your own website, on your own domain, that looks like part of the site.

If the customer has to leave your site, log into somebody else's system, and accept cookies from a company they've never heard of, half of them drop out before they've picked a time.

What a proper setup looks like

  • Booking calendar embedded on your own site, matching your brand.
  • Deposit or full payment via Stripe, straight into your own Stripe account (no middleman taking a cut per booking).
  • Automatic confirmation email to the customer, automatic calendar entry for you.
  • Reminder SMS or email 24 hours before, so no-shows drop.
  • A simple cancellation link — because forcing people to ring to cancel is how you get bad reviews.
  • Buffer times between bookings so you're not rushed.

What it costs

If you're having a website built anyway, adding a booking setup is usually £100 to £300 on top — depending on whether you need deposits, reminders, and how many services. After that it runs itself, and the only ongoing cost is the Stripe fee on deposits (1.5% + 20p for UK cards).

Compare that to £40-£60 a month to a third-party platform, forever. The one-off pays itself back inside a year for most businesses, and you own the thing at the end of it.

Who benefits most

In order of impact across the Saltaire/Shipley businesses we work with:

  1. Hair and beauty. Deposits cut no-shows. Evenings and Sundays book out without you touching the phone.
  2. Dog groomers and walkers. Recurring bookings, waitlists, and capacity caps — no more double-booking a Saturday morning.
  3. Clinics, physios, therapists. Direct online booking removes the awkward phone tag and lets clients book discreetly.
  4. Small restaurants and cafés with events. Table reservations, Sunday roast bookings, private dining enquiries.
  5. Tradespeople. Not full booking — but a structured enquiry form that asks the right questions saves an hour a day.

How we wire it in

When we build a website for a Saltaire or Shipley business, booking is one of the first conversations. We'll tell you honestly whether you need full self-serve or just a proper enquiry form. We wire it in, we test it on your actual phone, and we make sure deposits go to your Stripe account, not ours.

It's one part of the wider setup covered in everything a local business needs online. For many service businesses, it's the part that pays for the rest.
